Toprak Dogan is an 8-year-old boy full of life. Like other children his age, he wants to run, play, fall, and get back up again… But his story is a little different from other children’s. Toprak is fighting a genetic disease that weakens his muscles day by day. Even so, he is a little warrior who never gives up smiling and holds on tightly to life.
SO THAT TOPRAK CAN RUN... Every child in this world dreams of the same things: Running, jumping, playing… But for Toprak, this dream is slipping further away each day. Toprak Dogan is 8 years old and is battling a genetic muscle disease called DMD, which slowly causes the muscles to waste away. If left untreated, this disease first takes away a child’s ability to walk, and then threatens life by affecting the heart and breathing muscles. But there is hope! In Dubai, a chance has emerged for a genetic treatment that may stop Toprak’s disease. Thanks to this treatment, muscle loss may be halted and Toprak may be able to truly live his childhood again!
Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy (DMD) is a genetic muscle disease that appears in childhood. This disease causes the muscles to weaken and waste away over time. Children with DMD first struggle to run, then they can no longer climb stairs, and over time they lose the ability to walk. As the disease progresses, it also affects the heart and breathing muscles and becomes a serious threat to life. Although there is still no definitive cure today, advancing genetic treatments continue to offer hope. For Toprak, that hope can now become real.
